What we want
- Crosswalks across 36th St and Stone Way N to provide a safe way for people to cross both streets
- Daylighting around crosswalks to shorten crossing distance, and increase visibility of pedestrians

Why we want it
Busy car traffic on a 3-lane road (Stone Way) and a lack of safe pedestrian crossings creates a dangerous barrier between people and where they want to go to shop, workout, and go to school in this busy pedestrian area. This intersection has already been the site of many close calls and unsafe situations (a cyclist was even hit by a car on December 12, 2023).
- Stone Way N separates two busy pedestrian neighborhoods (Fremont and Wallingford) with limited pedestrian and cyclist crossings.
- Pedestrian traffic has been quickly increasing with the opening of Figurehead Brewing and Stone Way Café, and will only continue to increase as the new Brooks headquarters opens up.
- Traffic on Stone Way N is only going to increase when the Ship Canal Water Quality Project closure ends, and new local businesses open.
Improving pedestrian access would encourage more people to walk through this intersection confidently to get to where they need to go, enabling them to enjoy the attractions in this area. For instance:
- A parent and young child could cross Stone Way from their home along N 36th St. to the Fremont Community School
- A biker could head west along N 36th St. from the Burke Gilman Trail to access the Seattle Bouldering Project
- An elderly couple could cross Stone Way to get to Sea Wolf Bakery

Motorists and truck drivers consistently fail to see or stop for pedestrians waiting at the cutouts or mid-way through the intersection. With retail business increasing around 36th and Stone, the risk of an accident grows. It is clear from talking to the many businesses and residents in the area that adding crosswalks with sufficient daylighting to the intersection is the minimum necessary improvement. Further improvements could include:
- Safety crossing beacon to signal that pedestrians are crossing the intersection
- Added bike parking in the daylighting zones
- Signs reminding drivers that stopping for pedestrians is required by law, or reminding them to look out for bikes
